Professor Jeffrey Bergstrand is Professor of Finance in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. He has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, and international finance in the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA programs since 1986. He has his B.A. in economics and political science from Northwestern University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin. He has authored over 50 papers on determinants of international trade flows, foreign direct investment, multinational firm behavior, and real exchange rates.

But recently, we’ve seen firms take a more conservative approach with a just-in-case supply used to avoid running out of stock. The pandemic-induced devastation of supply chains put a spotlight on some of the challenges we face and exposed vulnerabilities in the just-in-time model.
